Here are 36 pics of what got did (and eaten) in this coldest capital city of the world that was oh so nice. This is the Ulaanbaatar Hotel, top digs of Mongolia, where we stayed. Enjoy!', 'The 2.5 day conference was part of the \"Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict\" (GPPAC) project - a cooperative project between the UN and civil society (NGO\'s and such) started by Kofi Annan a number of years back. Peace Boat is the Northeast Asia regional secretariat (the world is divided into 15 regions) and so, off we went for a meeting with Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, Russia and Mongolian representatives. ', 'But first, here is a fish-bowl view of the first restaurant we ate at upon arrival.', 'And when in Mongolia, what else but quesadillas would one have? Must say there were not too many veggie options...', 'Fish-bowl view from the other side. A real nice place!', 'Looking across the street from our hotel. Mongolia is the land of naitonal hero Genghis Kahn, who founded the empire in 1206. It went from the largest contiguous-land empire in world history, to being part of China, to being a Soviet Satellite state, to democracy in 1990-92 or so.', 'The Soviet (for those who are not old and crusty just yet, Soviet Union / USSR is basically Russia today) influence is still strong!', 'In the foreground is a statue of, erm, Stalin or Lenin... and over there on the hill is Mr. Genghis Kahn hisself.', 'Construction is booming.', 'Here is the central square, and over yonder sits Genghis Kahn.', 'One of the man\'s guards.', '', '', 'People in the street...', 'Here\'s that statue again, in the little park out front of the hotel.', '', 'How nice would it be to drive this thing around?', 'The conference we attended was hosted by the Mongolian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Some art in the main meeting hall.', 'The main meeting hall, all for a bunch of humble civil-society people.', 'The participants in the conference. If you really, really want the specifics of it all, a little google will get you there. As I write this, it is after midnight and I still have heaps of work, so all the explanations are about to get real short.', 'At night a group of us taxied down to, of all things, a massive Irish pub.', 'Said Irish Pub. And some very nice cars out front.', 'Around town.', 'The last night we had a wonderful cultural dinner and performance. This fellow and his son make for one of the country\'s most famous musical acts.', 'An art gallery sprung up in a concrete box.', 'More boxey old buildings. This was how most of the city looked.', 'And all over the place were bars and clubs inside these gnarly old buildings.', 'I heard that Mongolians are the Latin Americans of Asia - none of that Japanese quiet and shy personality here.', 'Meaningful graffiti.', '\"Meat for men, grass for animals!\" I\'ll look for my veggie dinner elsewhere...', 'And what did I find, but Los Bandidos Indian-Mexican restaurant!', 'I about did backflips - with a grain of salt of course. What could one expect?', 'None other than the best Mexican food in Asia! Absolutely SMOKING veggie chimichangas!', 'And some Indian rice-mild porriage for desert. That is colleague Jin-hye finishing her tacos over there.', 'And finally, the Genghis jump outside the airport at about midnight, waiting for our flight to take off. After a loooong night on the plane, I VERY nearly missed the connecting flight in Korea for Japan while dozing in the airport. Anyhow, a very busy week in a spectacular country. THE END' );
